On this interesting afternoon excursion with a local guide you will first drive along the scenic ocean road of the Portuguese Riviera, passing the cosmopolitan town of Estoril to arrive at the quaint fishing village of Cascais. Back in the early 20th century it was a popular resort favored by European nobility and kings and today is a colorful town with elegant pedestrian streets, some paved with blocks recreating wave patterns. There will be time here to look around and perhaps have some lunch before continuing to the town of Sintra. Enjoy an optional excursion to the spectacular city of Guimaraes, one of the country's most important historical cities. Its historical center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is often referred to as the "birthplace of the Portuguese nation" or "the cradle city". This is because it is thought to be the birthplace of Afonso Enriques (1110), the first Portuguese king, but also because of the historical role of the city in the Battle of Sao Mamede (1128), which had a tremendous importance in the formation of Portugal. During the free time you will be able to visit the historical center of the town with its ancient buildings, streets and squares dating back from the middle ages. Also nearby in an almost idyllic setting, is the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança (1401), the well preserved Medieval Castle and the Romanesque Chapel of Sao Miguel do Castelo, housing a font in which it is said Alfonso Enriques was baptized.
