The Great Migration

Thunder on the plains

Each year, Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve and Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park host one of nature’s greatest spectacles: The Great Migration. While often thought of as an annual event, it is, in fact, a continuous movement of more than 2 million animals in search of grazing land and water.

Across the vast plains, approximately 200,000 zebra, 500,000 antelope, and more than 1.5 million wildebeest move, all shadowed by predators and natural challenges – from big cats on the hunt to crocodiles waiting at river crossings. It is one of the most dramatic displays of survival in the natural world.

Mother Nature Calls the Shots

The Great Migration is driven by rainfall patterns and varies from year to year, making exact timing unpredictable. For the best chance to experience it, we recommend including both Kenya and Tanzania on your journey. Cosmos includes stays in both the Maasai Mara and the Serengeti, increasing opportunities to witness the herds throughout the year.

River crossings are typically the most active in July and August, through timing depends on weather conditions. Our experts adjust game viewing whenever possible to help you experience this remarkable event.

Great Migration Guide

  • January & February—Calving season in the southern Serengeti with nearly 500,000 newborn calves

  • March—Herds move north to the central Serengeti in search of fresh grazing

  • April & May—Migration spreads across the central and western Serengeti

  • June—Herds move into the northern Serengeti

  • July—Herds gather in the north and begin crossing into the Maasai Mara

  • August to Late October/Early November—Large concentrations remain in the Maasai Mara

  • December—Herds begin returning south with the rains
